Sarnath, India’s 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site


Sarnath is now an UNESCO World Heritage site. This is an ancient Buddhist site situated in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh . The site is inscribed as  India’s 45th UNESCO World Heritage site on 25th July, 2026 and announced by the UN grouping in Busan, South Korea in the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee. This is a sacred location and famous for stupa .  Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon here  in the 6th century BCE . Dhamek Stupa  is a massive cylindrical brick and stone structure which marks the exact spot of the first sermon . Chaukhandi Stupa  commemorates the place where Buddha met with his first disciples . Ashokan Pillars , built by Emperor Ashoka and its original Lion Capital serves as the National Emblem of India . The site is an important tourist destination and also a holy pilgrimage site for Buddhists worldwide .
