Vidyasagar Science Olympiad – 2025

It is an Initiative of School Education Department, Government of West Bengal

Organised by – Jagadish  Bose National Talent Search , Kolkata

It is a state wide competition which provides the talented science aspirants a platform to enhance their skills.


Eligibility criteria:


Top five students of class IX from all government aided, government recognized and sponsored schools of West Bengal can appear in the examination. Students are nominated by the Head of the institution on their academic performance in the class VIII final examination.

Structure and benefits of the examination –

The Vidyasagar State Science Olympiad is a three phase screening test .

Layer I – Intra – Unit Competition

Subject and Syllabus –
Physical Science – 40
Life Science – 30
Mathematics -30
Total – 100

Syllabus is equivalent to the syllabus of state board.


Questions type and Marking system –
50 MCQ questions, 2 marks for each question, 0.5 negative marks for each wrong answer.

Awards –
Top three (03) candidates would be awarded with Book Grant amounting to Rs. 1000/-.



Layer II – Intra District Competition

This test would be conducted for the top ten per cent qualified students from layer I of  the examination under each district of West Bengal.

Subject and Syllabus –
Physical Science – 40
Life Science – 30
Mathematics -30
Total – 100


Questions type and Marking system –
50 MCQ questions, 2 marks for each question, 1 negative mark for each  wrong answer.

Awards –
Top twenty per cent students from each district shall be entitled to receive Book Grant worth Rs. 2000/-.



Layer III – Intra State Competition

This phase of the examination accounts for top twenty per cent qualified students across all the districts of West Bengal selected through layer II .

Subject and Syllabus –
Physical Science – 20
Life Science – 20
Mathematics -20
Total – 60

Questions type and Marking system –
30 short type questions,every question carries 2 marks, no negative marking.


Awards –

   Top 100 candidates from all over West Bengal selected as Vidyasagar State Science Olympiad Scholarship awardees would be provided with scholarship worth Rs. 1000/- per month and annual book grant of Rs. 2500/- for two years along with mentoring workshops to prepare them for national level Examinations.


Application time  – Generally application starts in the month of April.

Exam date of Layer I – In the month of June.
