What is Verbal ?
A Verbal is a form of verb that doesn’t act as a verb but as other parts of speeches like noun, adjective or adverb .
Types of Verbals –
There are three types of Verbals. These are –
1 . Gerund
2 . Participle
3 . Infinitive
1 . Gerunds – Gerunds are identical to the Present Participle form of verbs but act act as a noun in a sentence . These are used as subject, object, object of a preposition, subject complement .
Examples –
As subject – Driving is my passion .
As object – I like driving .
As Object of Preposition – I utilised few hours today for drawing .
As Subject complement – My preferred hobby is drawing .
2 . Participles – Participles forms of verbs can be used as adjective.
For regular verbs , Participles are formed by adding ‘ d ‘, ‘ ed ‘ with the base verbs . These are same as the Past forms of verbs .
Example – Close ( base verb ) – Closed ( Past and Participle form )
It is a closed case .
Here closed is acting as an adjective.
For irregular verbs Participles forms can be formed by adding ‘ en ‘, ‘ ne ‘ , ‘ t ‘ with the base verb or at the end of the Past form of the verb .
Example – go ( base verb ) – gone ( Participle form )
break ( base verb ) – broke ( Past form ) – broken ( Participle form )
It is a broken glass .
Here the word broken is acting as an adjective.
3 . Infinitives – These are formed by adding ‘ to ‘ just before the base verbs . These can be used as noun, adjective and adverb .
Examples –
As noun( subject ) – To plan is essential.
As noun ( direct object ) – I like to draw .
As adjective – I have a plan to execute .
As adverb – She worked to help her mother .
