Use of ‘has / have had’ and ‘had had’- English Grammar


has / have had – Generally we use has / have and  had together in  a sentence of Present Perfect Tense in which ‘have’ is the main verb. We always use has / have as an auxiliary verb in the present perfect tense. And as per the rules of present perfect tense we use had as the past participle form of the main verb ‘ have’.

Examples – She has had a meeting just now .

They have had some problems.




had had – Generally we use had had together in a sentence of a Past Perfect Tense in which ‘had’ is the main verb and its past participle form is also ‘had.’ We also  use ‘had’ as an auxiliary verb in any Past Perfect Tense. So in this scenario we have to use ‘had had’ together.


Examples – She had had her lunch before the boss came.

The professor had had a conference before his  students arrived.
