Use of ‘ As soon as ‘ and ‘ No sooner …. than ‘

As soon as ‘ and ‘ No sooner ….than ‘ –


These two are used to express similar types of meaning but used differently in the sentence.


As soon as – It is used to indicate something that happened immediately after something or to do something immediately.

We use a noun or adjective immediately after ‘ As soon as ‘ in the sentence.

Examples of the sentences –

As soon as he completed his course , he got his job.

As soon as she started journey, it started raining.

As soon as the meeting was completed, we started our preparation.

As soon as you examine the answer scripts , publish the results.

No sooner …. than ‘ –

‘ No sooner ….than ‘ is used to indicate something that happened immediately after something else .

It can be used as the negative form of ‘ As soon as ‘ .

It is a conjunction.

When we use ‘ No sooner ‘ at the beginning of the sentence, it is always followed by a verb.

Examples of sentences –

No sooner had he completed his course than he got his job.

No sooner had she started journey than it started raining.

No sooner had the meeting completed than we started our preparation .




No sooner did they start to play than their coach arrived .

No sooner do we finish our lunch than our teacher calls us.
