Transformation of Assertive to Interrogative sentence


Transformation of Assertive to Interrogative sentence –

1 . If an auxiliary verb exists after the subject in an assertive sentence then the verb will be used at the beginning of the sentence and not or nโ€™tย  will be used after the auxiliary verb to transform to an interrogative sentence.

Examples – He is a good boy.
ย  Isnโ€™t he a good boy ?

She will come to my house tomorrow.
Won’t she come to my house tomorrow?

The boy can do this .
Can’t the boy do this ?


2. If an auxiliary verb exists in a negative sentence then to transform the sentence to an interrogative sentence, the verb is used at the beginning of the sentence and the negative word or not or nโ€™t disappears.

Examples – He is not a busy man.
Is he a busy man?

She can’t neglect it.
Can she neglect it ?



3. If there is no auxiliary verb in an assertive sentence then to transform the sentence to an interrogative one we need to use don’t / doesn’t / didn’t attend the beginning of the sentence.

Examples – She draws really well.
Doesn’t she draw really well ?

He played great yesterday.
Didn’t he play great football?

They perform really well.
Don’t they perform really well?





4. If the subject of an assertive sentence is โ€˜nothingโ€™ then it turns to โ€˜whatโ€™ to transform the sentence to an interrogative sentence.

Example – Nothing can be done now .
What can be done now ?

Nothing was possible for them .
What was possible for them ?



5. If there is โ€˜nothingโ€™ in an assertive sentence then it turns to โ€˜anythingโ€™ to transform the sentence to an interrogative sentence.

Example -The boy has nothing to do.
Does the boy have anything to do ?

He had nothing to do .
Did he have anything to do?




6. If there is โ€˜neverโ€™ in an assertive sentence then it turns to โ€˜everโ€™ to transform the sentence to an interrogative sentence.

Example – He never played football?
Did he ever play football?



7. If there is nobody/ no one / none in an assertive sentence then it turns to โ€˜whoโ€™ to transform the sentence to an interrogative sentence.

Examples –
Nobody can help you now.
Who can help you now ?

No one will be present there .
Who will be present there ?

None is assisting him .
Who is assisting him ?



8. If there is everybody / everyone / all in an assertive sentence then to transform the sentence to an interrogative sentence we need to use โ€˜whoโ€™ instead of everybody / everyone / all .

Also we use don’t / doesn’t / didn’t as per the subject and tense if there is no auxiliary verb.

If an auxiliary verb exists in the assertive sentence then we use not or n’t after the auxiliary verb .

Examples –

Everybody joined the meeting.
Who didn’t join the meeting?

Everyone likes to be there.
Who doesn’t like to be there ?


All were present there .
Who wasn’t present there?
