Tokyo Olympic 2020 is just over now. We have gathered thrilling experience through ‘ The Greatest Show on the Earth.’ It was scheduled to be held in 2020 , but due to Corona Virus pandemic it was rescheduled in 2021 and held from 23rd July to 08th August this year. The opening ceremony was held on 23rd July in the Olympic Stadium, Tokyo. Traditional Parade of Nations was also happened. It was formally opened by the Emperor Naruhito and at the end of the Torch Relay the Olympic cauldron was lid by Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka. The motto of this edition was ‘ United by Emotion’. More than11,000 sports persons participated in 339events in 33 sports or 50 disciplines. Participants from 205 nations and Olympic Refugee Team participated in this edition. United States assured the top position in medal count with 39 golds and total 113 medals. China just finished behind with 38 gold and total 88 medals. The host Japan finished third with 27 gold and 58 total medals.

It has become the most successful Olympic for India with 7 medals included 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. India finished at forty eighth position in this edition. A 23 year old athlete Neeraj Chopra achieved the only gold medal for India in javelin. He became the first Indian to bring gold medal in athletics or track and field. He is the second individual to get gold medal in Olympic after Abhinav Bindra , who won gold medal in 10m air rifle in 2008. Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in World Junior Championships ,2016 , a gold in South Asian Games in 2016, a gold in Asian Championships 2017, a gold in Commonwealth Games 2018, a gold in Asian Games 2018. So he was a hope to get a medal in Tokyo Olympic 2020 also. Neeraj Chopra qualified for final with just one throw in qualifying round and ranked first. In final his first attempt was 87.03m. and second attempt was 87.58m. long. That was enough to bring gold medal for him.

For the first time in the history India achieved a medal in Olympic on day one of Olympic Games , when Saikhom Mirabai Chanu achieved silver medal in women’s 49 kg weightlifting. Her dream for Olympic medal was broken in 2016 Rio Olympic. Then she became the world champion in her event and also achieved Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2018. She participated in this edition of Olympic with a third rank in the world. With a 87kg lift in the snatch and 115 kg lift in the clean and jerk , she got the silver medal.

The silver medalist in 2016 Rio Olympic P.V. Sindhu achieved a bronze medal this time in women’s single badminton. She became the first woman to get two Olympic medals for India and only the second Indian to achieve this after Sushil Kumar in wrestling. PV. Sindhu was beaten in semi final this time by eventually silver medallist Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei but she came back in fight to get bronze medal with 21-13, 21-15 win against HE Bing jiao of People’s Republic of China.

The only medal in boxing for India this time was brought by a 23 year old Lovlina Borgohain in women’s welterweight boxing. She got medal at the last two World Championships and also at two Asian Championships. She became the second Indian female boxer to get a gold in Olympic after legendary Mary Kom. She was defeated in the semifinal by eventually gold and 2019 World Champion medallist Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey . Lovlina Borgohain got het medal by defeating 2018 World Champion Chen Nien- Chin of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinal by 4-1 by points.

23 year old, Ravi Kumar Dahiya became the second Indian to bring silver medal in wrestling in men’s 57 kg wrestling . He was a bronze medallist in 2019 World Championship and also won the last two Asian Championships. He won the semifinal against Nurislam Sanayev , a grappler from Kazakhstan.. Dahiya was behind by 2-9 in the semifinal when 90 seconds were left. He closed the gap to 7-9 and then won it dramatically by ‘pin fall’ to reach the final. In the final he was defeated by two times World Champion Zavur Uguev of ROC.

Bajrang Punia brought the second medal for the country in wrestling when he got bronze in men’s 65 kg wrestling. The 27 year old was the three times World Championships medallist and was a hope to get a medal. But he was defeated by Azerbaijan’s Haji Aliyev by 12-5 in the semifinal. Then he came back to win a bronze medal convincingly against Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan by 8-0. Wrestling delivered medals continuously for India in Olympic since 2008.

After a long period of wait for 41 years India achieved a medal in Olympic Hockey, when men’s hockey team won a bronze medal this time by defeating Germany by 5-4 goals. The most successful nation in the history of Olympic hockey with 8 gold medals had weight very long to get another medal. They were defeated by Belgium, eventually gold medal winner by 5-2 in semifinal and lost a chance to appear in final. Also history created by women’s hockey team of India when they reached the semifinal for the first time by defeating Australia but unfortunately missed to get any medal.

Overall It has become a memorable Olympic for India. We hope it will bring more inspirations to achieve more in future.
