Tarashankar Bandopadhyay – great Indian novelist – born on 23rd July, 1898 in Labhpur, Birbhum , Bengal Presidency , British India – 125th year celebration – wrote 65 novels, 53 storybooks, 12 plays, 4 essay books, 4 autobiographies and 2 travel stories – Matriculation from Labhpur Jadablal High School – went to St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta and then South Suburban College – he joined non – cooperation movement and independence movement – arrested in 1930 – first novel Chaitali Ghurni – some famous works – Ganadevata, Abhijan, Bicharak, Jalsaghar, Raikamal, Aagun, Kavi, Chandranath, Ganna Begum – Jalsaghar was filmed by Satyajit Ray in 1938 – Jnanpith Award in 1966 for Ganadevata – Rabindra Puraskar in 1955 for his novel Arogya Niketan – Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956 – Awarded with Padma Shri in 1962 – Padma Bhushan in 1969 – nominated for Nobel Prize in literature in 1971 and posthumously in 1972 – led the Indian delegation to the Asian Writers’ Conference in Tashkent in 1957 – President of Bangiya Sahitya Parishad in 1970 – member of West Bengal Vidhan Parishad from 1952-60 – member of Rajya Sabha from 1969-66 – died 14th September, 1971 in Calcutta – Celebrated 125th year birth anniversary in 2023
