Splitting of Sentences, Concept , Methods, Rules and Examples

Splitting of sentences is the process by which a sentence can be split up into short sentences. In this process a long sentence can be split up into short simple sentences with only one finite verb .

Methods

1 . A long sentence can be split by turning Infinitives, Gerunds, Participles, Absolute Phrases, Appositive Phrases , Adjective or Participle Adjectives, Adverb Phrases, too .

Examples – He is active to do the job on time .

Splitting – He is active . He can do the job on time .

He earns his living by editing proof .

Splitting – He edits proof. He earns his living by this .

He started a growing business.

Splitting – He started a business. This is a growing business.

He has finished the tough job.

Splitting – He has finished the job. The job was tough.

Situation favouring, we will win the match.

Splitting – Situation is in favour. We will win the match.

Bela, my childhood friend, is a fantastic dancer.

Splitting – Bela is my childhood friend. She is a fantastic dancer.

I know the sensational boy.

Splitting – I know the boy. He is sensational.

He has a running shop.

Splitting – He has a shop. This is a running shop.

He is doing his job silently.

Splitting – He is doing his job. He is doing it silently.

He is too weak to walk .

Splitting – He is very weak . He can’t walk .

2 . Splitting sentences from Compound Sentence – It can be done by withdrawing Coordinating Conjunctions, Conjunctive Adverbs or Semicolons from the sentence .

Examples – He is brilliant and clever.

Splitting – He is brilliant. He is clever .

He is poor but honest.

Splitting – He is poor . He is honest .

The bus service is good ; moreover , it is pocket friendly.

Splitting – The bus service is good. The bus service is pocket friendly.

Mimo is brilliant whereas Susa is hardworking.

Splitting – Mimo is brilliant. Susa is hardworking.

They performed superbly ; they gave us entertainment.

Splitting – They performed superbly. They gave us entertainment.

3 . Splitting of sentences from Complex Sentence – It is done by withdrawing Noun Clause, Adjective Clause ( Relative Pronouns, Relative Adverbs ) , Adverb Clause from the sentence.

Examples – It is known to us that he is a doctor .

Splitting – He is a doctor. It is known to us.

You must practise what your teacher has suggested.

Splitting – Your teacher has suggested this. You must practise this .

He completed the project which was important.

Splitting – He completed the project. It was important.

They have a car whose colour is blue .

Splitting – They have a car . Its colour is blue.

This is the college where they are studying.

Splitting – This is the college . They are studying here .

It was a historic moment when he lifted the trophy.

Splitting – He lifted the trophy . It was a historic moment.

He can’t attend the meeting because he is ill.

Splitting – He is ill . He can’t attend the meeting.

We will grant the loan whenever you submit the paper.

Splitting – Submit the paper. We will grant the loan .

He has been waiting for the interview since afternoon.

Splitting – He is waiting for the interview. He has been waiting since afternoon.

His brother is as clever as him .

Splitting – He is clever . His brother is equally clever .

4. Splitting of sentence from Compound – Complex Sentence –

Example – He is a clever and intelligent staff who can supervise the task.

Splitting – He is a clever staff. He is intelligent. He can supervise the task.
