One of the famous and veteran Bengali writers,  Sankar is no more. His full name was Mani Sankar Mukherjee.  This famous person of both the Bengali and English literature was born 7th December, 1933 in Hindmotor of Hooghly district of West Bengal. He was a writer, novelist, essayist and researcher. He had various jobs like typist, cleaner, private tutor and hawker in his early life. He made a great work by writing books on Swami Vivekananda. His first novel was ‘Kato Ajanare’ . Some of his famous creations are – Jekhane Jemon , Chowringhee, Swarga Marta Patal, Gharer Madhye Ghar, Nagar Nandini, Charan Chuye Jai, Banglar Meye, Eka eka ekashi , etc. Many of his works were adapted as Bengali movies. Such as – Chowringhee, Jana Aranya and Seemabaddha. Jana Aranya and Seemabaddha were directed by Satyajit Ray. Chowringhee was a famous movie in which Mahanayak Uttam Kumar acted in a very crucial role. It was based on a novel telling the story of a hotel named by Sankar as  hotel Shahjahan. He achieved many awards like Bankim Puraskar for Gharer Madhye Ghar in 1993, Sahitya Akademi Award in 2021, ABP Ananda Sera Bangali Award ( Serar Sera ) in 2022 . He also served as the Sheriff of Kolkata. This famous son of West Bengal died on 20th February, 2026 due age related illness. It is a great loss for the world of Bengali literature.
