Reusable Launch Vehicle and the Pushpak mission of ISRO

Another milestone achieved by ISRO . They have successfully demonstrated RLV LEX-02 to show autonomous landing capability of RLV from off- nominal initial conditions at release from helicopter. RLV means Reusable Launch Vehicle. ISRO accomplished the RLV LEX -01 mission last year. This time they have successfully done the experiment conducted at Aeronautical Test Range ( ATR ) , Chitradurga in Karnataka on March 22 at 7:10 hrs. IST in the morning. This RLV was made to undertake more manoeuvres with  dispersions, correct both cross – range and down range and land on the runway in a fully autonomous mode. The wing vehicle is called ‘Pushpak’. It was lifted by an Indian Air Force Chinook helicopter and was released from 4.5 km altitude. With this success ISRO has demonstrated the indigenously developed technologies in the areas of navigation, control system , landing gear and deceleration system essential for performing a high speed autonomous landing of a space – returning vehicle. ISRO has also demonstrated the reuse capability of flight hardware and flight system through this mission by reusing the wing  body and flight system of RLV LEX-01.

The team was guided by Shri Sunil P, Programme Director , Advanced Technology and Systems Programme, VSCC ; Shri J Muthupandian, Project Director, RLV was the mission Director and Shri B. Karthik, Deputy Project Director, RLV was the Vehicle Director of the mission.

The mission was accomplished by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre ( VSSC ), Liquid Propulsion System Centre ( LPSC ) and ISRO Inertial System Unit ( IISU ) with collaboration of various agencies like IAF, ADE, ADRDE, CEMILAC. ISTRAC provided tracking support, SAC provided a pseudolite system and a Ka- band Radar Altimeter, LPSC provided all pressure sensors on the wing body, IISU provided navigation hardware / software and integrated solution , meteorological and wind measurement support was provided by SDSC – SHAR and ground power support was provided by URSC.
