The wonder City and its architectures-
Petra , the wonder city of Jordan, is situated between Red Sea and Dead Sea and is surrounded by mountains with passages and gorges, was inhabited since prehistoric times, one of the important place for trade in that time. It is now world wide famous for its architectures made of sandstone.
It was the capital city of the kingdom of Nabataeans , who were nomadic Arabs invested in Petra to make it as a major regional trade hub in this trade route. They were also skillful in agriculture, rainwater harvesting, stone carving. They might settled there in 4th century B.C. The archaeological discoveries proof that they were there in second century B.C.
The famous structure of Petra- Khazneh was constructed in the 1st century A.D. , which is believed to be the mausoleum of Nabataean king Aretas iv. It is famous for its rock-cut architecture. Petra is also called as ‘ Rose City ‘ because of the colour of the stone from which it was built or curved.
It is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and in 2007 it was voted as one of the New 7Wonders of the World by a vote of 100 million people.
