In English grammar , the number refers to the count of any noun or pronoun .
Example – Girl – girls , Pen ποΈ – Pens
Types of Number – There are two types – 1. Singular Number , 2. Plural Number
1 . Singular Number – Singular Number refers to the count of only one of a noun or pronoun.
Example – Book π , Sister
2. Plural Number – Plural Number refers to count of more than one of a noun or pronoun .
Example – Books π, Sisters
Rules to Change Number –
1 . Generally ‘ s’ is used at the end of a singular noun to make plural form –
Example – Cat π – Cats
Orange π – Oranges
2 . When a noun ends with “ch ” and the “ch” pronuonce like ” k ” , then “s” is added to make plural – Example – Stomach – Stomachs
3.When a noun ends with ” O ” and there’s a vowel before that ” O ” , then ” s” is added to make plural – Example – Bamboo – Bamboos
4. If a noun ends with ” O ” and there’s a consonant before it, then ” s ” is used to make plural – Example – Photo – Photos
5.When a noun ends with “y” and there’s a vowel ahead of the “y”, then “s” is used to make plural – Example – Boys – Boys , Day – Days
6. If there’s “ful” at the end of a noun, then “s” is added to make the plural form. Example – Handful – Handfuls
7. When the term “man” exist in a word as a part and it refers to any ethnic group, race , then “s” is added at the end to make the plural form of the noun . Example – Brahman – Brahmans
8. If a compound noun formed with several words , then “s” is added at the end of the noun to make the plural form. Example – Sister – in – law – Sisters – in – law
9. To make the plural form of letters, numbers and other symbols , an “apostrophe and s ” are used . Example – 9 – 9’s – He multiply 9’s two times.

10. If a noun ends with s, sh, ch, x, z ; then ” es ” used at the end of the word to make plural form –
Example – Branch – Branches
Bus π – Buses
11. When a noun ends with “O” and there’s a consonant before the ” O ” , then ” es ” is added to make the plural form – Example – Mango π₯- Mangoes, Potato π₯- Potatoes.
12.When a noun ends with ” y ” and a consonant before that “y “, then “ies ” used in place of “y” to make the plural form – Example – Story – Stories , Fly – Flies
13. When a noun ends with a “f” or “fe” , then “ves” replace it to make the plural form – Example – Wife – Wives , Wolf πΊ – Wolves.
14. Sometimes both “s ” and “es” can be used at the end of a noun to make the plural form. Example – Memento – Mementos
15. Sometimes vowel at the middle of a noun changes to make the plural form of the noun. Example – Tooth π¦· – Teeth, Woman – Women
16. Sometimes “en”, “ren”, “ne” need to add at the end of the noun to make the plural form. Example – Child – Children , Ox- Oxen
17. If the term ” man ” exists as a part of a compound noun , then “men” substitutes “man” to form the plural form of the noun. Example – Salesman – Salesmen
18. Some nouns have the same singular and plural form . Example – Deer π¦ , Sheep π ,
19. Some singular nouns are only used as singular, they have no plural form . Example – Information, Furniture
20. Some nouns are always used as plural and they have no singular form. Example – Scissors βοΈ
21. Some nouns look like singular but actually they are plural . Example – People
22. Some nouns look like plural but they are actually singular. Example – News, Physics
