What is Letter?

Letter is a symbolic representation of a sound in its written form.

Example – a, b, c, d

What is Alphabet?

Alphabet is a set of letters in a particular and fixed order.

There are 26 letters in English alphabet.

What is Word ?

Word is a letter or a group of letters expresses a particular meaning .

Example – Mango 🥭 – It has a meaning , so it is a word.

Vowels and Consonants

In English alphabet a, e, i, o, u , these five letters are called vowels.

When we pronounce these our mouth becomes more open.

Rest of the letters in the English alphabet are called consonants.

When we pronounce these letters our mouth becomes fairly closed. Not only that when we talk consonants are divided into the stream of vowels .

Example – b, c,d,f

SemiVowel – When a letter or speech sounds like a vowel but used as a consonant is called semivowel.

Example – W in the word ‘ Wet ‘. Y in the word ‘ Yet ‘.

Syllable – A syllable is a single and uninterrupted unit of a speech or sound or word . It can be a whole word or parts of a word, generally containing vowel.

Types of Syllble

1.Open Syllable – When a syllable ends with a vowel and the vowel has a long sound , is called open syllable.

Example – cry, I

2. Closed Syllable When a syllable ends with a consonant and there is a vowel before the final consonant with a short sound.

Example – dog, mat.

3. VowelConsonante Syllable – This syllable end with a ‘silent e ‘ and has consonant just before the ‘silent e’. And the vowel before these has a long sound.

Example – cute.

4. Consonantle Syllable – This syllable has no vowel sound and a ‘silent e’ at the end is the only vowel. Only the ‘ l ( L ) ‘ and Consonant are pronounced.

Example – ‘ble’ in table .

5. R controlled Syllable – The syllable always has at least one vowel followed by ‘ r ‘. Example – her, for

6. Vowel Team Syllable – This syllable usually has two vowels which are adjacent and pronounced together .

Example – tail, nail

7. Diphthong Syllable – It also contains two vowels and with the combination of there sound a new vowel sound is formed. It forms generally with these types of vowels combination – ou, oi, oo, oy, ow, aw, au,ew

Example – blue, cloud

As per the division of word in numbers of syllable, Syllable can be divided in following types also

1.Monosyllable – It is a word that has only single syllable.

Example – pay , log

2. Polysyllable – When a word has two or more syllables , it is called polysyllabic word. Example – children, University

Words having two syllables are also called

disyllabic words

Example – finger, butter

Words having three syllables are called trisyllabic words.
