Interjection – Definition, Types, Examples and Punctuation

What is Interjection?

An Interjection is a word or phrase used in a sentence to indicate feelings, request, demand or to emphasize some feelings .

They insert exclamation into the sentence.

These are parts of speech but not connected grammatically with other parts of speech.

They can be a single word or phrase .

They are independent part of sentence .

Even if we exclude Interjection from sentence , it doesn’t impact the meaning of the sentence.

Usually they can’t be modified.

Example – Wow , Goodness , Hurray, Yippee , etc

Types of Interjection

1 . Primary Interjections – These are the Interjections used only as Interjections and they can’t be used as other parts of speech.

These are -Wow, Oh, Hurray, Ouch, Huh, Phew, Aw, Alas, Gee, God, Geez, Blah, Yuck, Oops, Meh, Ugh

Example of sentences

Hurray! We have won the game .

Ugh! This is really irritating.

2. Secondary Interjections – These are the Interjections which can be used as other types of parts of speech also .

ExampleGoodness! How he scored the goal ?

Indeed , they were waiting for the moment .

3 . Mild Interjections – These Interjections are used to express relatively mild feelings and expressions.

These are separated by a comma from the rest of the sentence .

Examples

Well, it is not expected.

Hmm, the boy is performing good .

4 . Strong Interjections – These are used to indicate strong expression of feelings .These are generally seperated by exclamation marks from rest of the sentence.

Example

Wow ! What a pleasant weather .

Yippee! We have done it .

5 . Vilitive Interjections – These are used to express requests, commands and wishes .

Example – Enough , Ahem , Psst, Shh , Shoo

Example of sentences –

Enough! Stop this discussion.

Ahem ! I am searching for another method .

6. Emotive Interjections – These are used to indicate emotions like delight , surprise, sorrow, disgust, fear .

These generally used to replace ‘ I feel‘ expression in speech .

ExampleUgh ! What a bad infrastructure.

Yippee! Our institution reached the final .

Yam! What a delicious dish .

Alas ! His grandfather has passed away.

7 . Cognitive Interjections – These Interjections are born off cognition. These are used to express thought , feelings and emotions that people collect through experiences.

Examples

Bravo! What a stunning effort .

Eureka! I have found the answer.

Um, can it be explained elaborately?

Well, I will do it again .

8. Greetings and Parting Words – These are Interjections used greet, welcome someone or to express good wishes.

Example

Hello! It’s nice to meet you.

See you soon! Take care .

9 . Interjections express only Yes or No –

ExampleYes! I will definite

ly go there .

Nah, they are not attending the party.

Punctuation marks regarding Interjections –

Commonly we can use Exclamation mark to emphasize the intensity of an feeling, emotion , thought or demand . Particularly for the extreme cases.

Example

Awesome! What a performance.

When emotion, thought, feeling or demand is less extreme we don’t use Exclamation mark and use full stop at the end of the sentence.

Example

Well, You need to come again .

We use comma after an Interjection to seperate from the rest part of the sentence , if express less extreme feeling or thought .

Example

Indeed, this is a fantastic story.

When we use an Interjection to express uncertainty or questions, we use question mark after it or at the end of the sentence.
