‘Gaganyaan’ mission is India’s first human space flight program and is set to launch in 2024-25. This project’s aim is to demonstrate human’s spaceflight capability by launching crew members into an orbit of 400 km for a three day mission and to bring them back safely to the earth by landing in Indian sea waters. ISRO, DRDO and HAL are working together to accomplish the mission successfully.

LVM3 rocket, which is a well proven and heavy lift launcher of ISRO , is identified as the launch vehicle of the mission. It consists of solid stage, liquid stage and cryogenic stage.

HLVM3 will be utilized to launch the Orbital Module to an intended Low Earth Orbit of 400 km. It will consist of CES or Crew Escape System for the safety of crew members in any emergency situation.

Orbital Module or OM will be orbiting Earth . It has two main parts – CM or Crew Module and SM or Service Module.

CM or Crew Module is the habitable space for the crew members to provide Earth like environment. It will be of double walled construction including pressurized metallic Inner Structure and unpressurized External Structure with Thermal Protection System or TPS.

SM or Service Module will be utilized to provide support to the Crew Module while in Orbit. It is an unpressurized structure including thermal system, propulsion system, power systems, avionics systems and deployment mechanisms.

The four astronauts who were chosen for this mission are – Group Captain Prashanth Nair, Group Captain Angad Prathap, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla. These Indian Air Force officers are going to create a great history . They had undergone extensive training in Russia and now the program and preparation is underway in ISRO training centre, India.
