India scripted history by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final on 8th March at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. They are the only team to win this title for the third time and also the first team to win the successive T20 World Cup in 2024 and 2026. India and Sri Lanka co hosted the tournament. New Zealand won the toss and elected to field. The Indian top order performed brilliantly to make a massive score . They scored 255/5 in their 20 overs. They have crossed the 250 runs both in semi final and final matches. Indian openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma made a record of first ever 50+ runs of partnership in any T20 World Cup final. This duo scored 92 runs in first six overs which is highest in powerplay by any team in this T20 World Cup and jointly second highest in the history. Abhishek Sharma scored 52 runs in just 21 balls and Sanju Samson scored 89 runs in just 46 balls. Sanju is the second man to score three successive 80+ runs in any T20 World Cup only after Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka in 2010. He also became the third player to score a half century both in the semi final and final of a T20 World Cup. Ishan Kishan also continued his dream form in the tournament and scored 54 off just 25 balls. At the back end of the innings Shivam Dube scored 24 runs in the last over and proved himself again. In reply New Zealand was all out for just 159 runs. Tim Seifert was only one batter for them to fight a little and scored 52 runs in 26 balls. The magician Jasprit Bumrah bowled beautifully again and took 4 wickets for just 15 runs in his 4 overs and became the Player of the Match in the final. Axar Patel took 3/ 27 in his 3 overs. Sanju Samson became the Player of the Tournament for his stunning batting performance in three consecutive matches. Sahibzada Farhan of Pakistan scored most runs in the tournament ( 383 runs ). Both Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy of India jointly took the most wickets in the tournament and they took 14 wickets each. India totally outperformed New Zealand in the final to become the first team to defend the title. India is the first team to win the title in their home soil. They also made a record to score 255 runs in the final which is highest in any ICC T20 World Cup. They are the first team to score 250+ runs both in semi final and final in any ICC T20 World Cup and a victory with 96 runs is the largest margin in the history of the T20 World Cup.
