A wait of thirteen years is over now. Because it was 2011 when India won the ICC ODI World Cup and now in 2024 India has achieved another ICC World Cup by winning ICC Men’s T20 International World Cup for the second time. In the final of the 9th ICC T20 World Cup India defeated South Africa on 29th June , 2024 at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados . Last time India won the T20 World Cup was in 2007. Now India, England and West Indies won the trophy for the second time which is the highest among all cricket playing nations. This time twenty nations participated in the tournament. Among them India, England, South Africa and Afghanistan reached the Semi Final. India defeated England and South Africa defeated Afghanistan to reach the final. The South African Cricket team also made history by reaching the final of any major ICC tournament or World Cup for the first time. In the final South African skipper Aiden Markram lost the toss but their bowler started well to take three early wickets . Then Virat Kohli and Axar Patel consolidated Indian innings nicely. Virat scored 76 runs off 59 balls . Axar Patel( 47 off 31 balls ) and Shivam Dube ( 27 off 16 balls ) both supported him nicely and India scored a competitive total of 176/ 7 after 20 overs. Anrich Nortje was the best bowler for South Africa to take 2 wickets for 26 runs in 4 overs. In reply Indian pace trio – Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya bowled superbly to restrict South Africa at 169/8 after 20 overs and won the match by 7 runs. Heinrich Klassen played beautifully for South Africa and scored 52 runs off just 27 balls. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh both took 2 wickets and conceded just 18 and 20 runs respectively in their 4 overs. Hardik Pandya took 3 wickets for 20 runs in 3 overs. In the last over South Africa needed 16 runs to win the match but they failed. Suryakumar Yadav took a stunning catch of David Miller to make it tougher for South Africans. The Indian team became the unbeaten champion in the tournament. The captain Rohit Sharma achieved an ICC trophy for the first time as a captain. Virat Kohli is now the only Indian cricketer to win all ICC World Cup and major tournaments as he won the under 19 ICC World Cup in 2008 as the captain of the team, ICC ODI World Cup in 2011, ICC Champions Trophy in 2013, ICC T20 World Cup in 2024. He became the player of the match in the final and Jasprit Bumrah became the player of the tournament for his outstanding bowling performance throughout the world cup. Rahmatullah Gurbaz of Afghanistan scored the most runs (281 runs ) in the tournament . Fazalhaq Farooqi of Afghanistan and Arshdeep Singh of India took most wickets ( 17 wickets ) in the tournament. Now Indian star batter Virat Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma and star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja declared retirement from the T20 International.
