Horrific and one of the most devastating – train accident – in the history of Indian Railway – three trains involved – happened on 2nd June, around 7pm – near the Bahanaga Bazaar railway station, Balasore, Odisha – South – Eastern Railway zone – 12841 up Shalimar – MGR Chennai Central Coromandel Express entered the loop line instead of going through the main line – a goods train was standing there – the express was in very high speed and collided with the goods train – loco pilot coach and the engine of the express upraised above the goods train – 21 coaches of the express derailed – few of them totally smashed – three of those coaches collided with 12864 SMVT Bengaluru – Howrah SF Express – It was coming through the adjacent track – 2 coaches of this express also derailed – everything happened within few seconds – 288 people died – more than thousands people injured – local people came immediately and started rescue operation – soon Railway and other government agencies like National Disaster Response Force, Odisha Disaster Response Force started the rescue operation – many doctors, police personnel were involved – fire rescue teams were participated – 200 ambulances were utilised – Government of West Bengal sent 39 ambulances , 40 doctors and several nursing staff – injured were admitted to different hospitals – Railway and governments of Odisha, West Bengal and Tamilnadu opened helpline numbers – Railway announced to start investigation for the accident – Railway announced compensation of Rs. 10 lakh to the families of deceased, Rs. 2 lakh to the severely injured and Rs. 50,000 to those having minor injuries – PMNRF will give ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to those having injuries – government of West Bengal announced a compensation for the families of the passengers of West Bengal- Rs. 5 lakh for the families of the deceased , Rs. 1 lakh to those having critical injuries and Rs. 50,000 to those having minor injuries
