Historic Double Gold Medals Win for India in FIDE Chess Olympiad 2024

Historic Double Gold medal win for India in the FIDE Chess Olympiad 2024. It was the 45th edition of the tournament . India never achieved any Gold medal before in this event . This time two Gold came both from the men and women team after beating their respective opponents in their final round in Budapest , Hungary. The Indian men’s team beat Slovenia and the women’s team defeated Azerbaijan in their final round . It was a clean sweep. Only China and the Soviet Union achieved this success in the past to win both Gold medals in the same edition.

For men  Indian Grandmaster D.Gukesh was excellent to win against Slovenia’s Vladimir Fedoseev. Arjun Erigasi also beat Jan Subelj. R. Praggnanandhaa  won against Antony Demchenko. On the fourth board, Vidit Gujarathi played out a draw to give India a marvellous victory . In the men’s or open round the United States achieved the Silver medal and Uzbekistan won the Bronze medal.

Not only a Gold medal for the team , Gukeah and Erigasi achieved individual Gold medals on the first and third board respectively in the open section.

For the Indian women’s team, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, Harika Dronavalli achieved their win and R. Vaishali settled for a draw. They achieved their historical Gold medal. Kazakhstan achieved the Silver medal and the USA won the Bronze medal.


Divya Deshmukh and Vantika Agrawal won individual Gold medals in the women’s section on board three and four respectively.

Overall India also achieved the Gaprindashvili trophy for their best performance across the open and women’s section of the tournament.
