XAT or Xavier Admission Test –

Conducted by – XLRI or Xavier Labour Relations Institute
They are conducting the exam for more than 72 years.

Level – All India level .

Purpose – For the admission in Post Graduate Management Programmes or PGDM or MBA in XLRI , Jamshedpur, other XAMI  ( Xavier Association of Management Institutes ) member colleges and over 160
Business Schools .

Some major courses – 1 . PGDM ( Human Resource Management Programme )

2. PGDM ( Business Management Programme )

3. PGDM ( GM or General Management )

4. Fellow Program in Management ( FPM )

5. Executive Fellow Programme in Management ( EXEC – FPM )

Admission procedure in the courses offered by XLRI –

1 . For PGDM ( HRM and BM ) –

Indian Candidates can apply through XAT score.

NRI / Foreign candidates can apply through XAT or GMAT scores.

Generally follows the timeline below –

Registration starts – July

Registration closes – November

Admit card download – December

XAT Exam – January , first week

Shortlist for Interview – 3rd week of January

Interviews – Mid – February to Mid – March

Offers and waitlist – April

Academic session begins – Mid – June

2. For PGDM ( GM ) –

Candidates ( Indian / NRI / Foreign ) having minimum 5 years of work experience can apply through XAT / GMAT / GRE

Generally follows the timeline below –

Registration opens – July 1st for GMAT / GTR and July 15 for XAT

Registration closes through XAT – November

Registration closes through GMAT / GRE – December

XAT admit card download – December

XAT Exam – January , 1st week

Shortlist for Interview – 3rd week of January

Interviews – 1st week of February

Offers and waitlist – 2nd week of February

Academic session begins – April



Type of the test – Online exam is conducted all over India in 81 cities .

Language of the test – English

Time of the year – The exam is conducted in the month of January, every year.

Exam syllabus
1 . Decision making – use of critical thinking, problem solving skills and decision taking skills

2 . Verbal and Logical Ability – Critical and Analytical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, English Grammar, Vocabulary, Patajumbles, Cloze Test , etc.

3. Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation – Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Modern Math, etc.


4. General Knowledge – Politics, Culture, Sports, Entertainment, Society, Current Affairs, National and International news, Invention, Innovation, Business, Economy, Technology, etc .

5. Analytical Essay Writing – Candidates have to pick one topic from the given three  topics generally based on Social and Business domains and they have to write the essay of 250 words.


Question pattern – 100 MCQ questions

1 . Decision making – 22 questions

2. Verbal and Logical Ability – 26 questions

3. Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation – 28 questions

4. General Knowledge – 25 questions

5. Analytical Essay Writing – 1 ( to be  evaluated for the shortlisting of candidates )

Eligibility – 1 . Candidates must have a  qualification of  Bachelor degree of minimum three years duration or equivalent in any discipline from a recognised university.

2. Students of final year and awaiting for the result can also apply .

3. No minimum marks required .

4. Working professionals and candidates having professional degrees ( CA / CS ) can also apply.

Number students participated in 2024 – 1.35 lakh



Exam duration – 3 hours 30 minutes. In 2024 the schedule is – from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm.
