Exam Talk – JAM or Joint Admission test for Masters

JAM or Joint Admission test for Masters –

Conducted by – Different IITs ( Indian Institute of Technology) conducts the test in different years. Example – IIT Madrasah was in charge of conducting the test.

Purpose of the test – JAM score is used for the admission in various Masters or PG courses like – i . M.Sc,  ii. M.Sc ( Tech ),
iii. MS ( Research ),  iv. M.Sc – MTech  Dual Degree ,  v. Joint M.Sc – Ph.D,   vi. M.Sc – Ph.D Dual Degree

Admitting Institute – All the IITs over India .
In 2024-25 , 21 IITs will take admission to over 3000 seats.

Candidates will be entitled for the admission without any additional interview or written test and based on their rank . But they need to have satisfying ERs or Eligibility Requirements and MEQs or Minimum Educational Qualifications.

Result Sharing Institutions – JAM score will be used for the admission to over 2000 seats in Post Graduate Programs like M.Sc and MA in IISc, various NITs, IIEST Shibpur, SLIET, DIAT through centralised counselling for M.Sc or M.Sc ( Tech ) admission (CCMN ).

There will not be any separate written test or interview for candidates seeking admission in these institutions but they need to have satisfying Education Qualification and Eligibility.

In 2024 IISc will accept the JAM score for the admission in four Ph.D programmes and two M.Sc Programmes.

JAM score 2024 will also be used by other famous institutions like Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research ( JNCASR ) , Indian Institute of Science Education and Research ( IISER , Bhopal ) , Indian Institute of Science Education and Research ( IISER, Pune ), Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy ( IIPE ) . Candidates need to approach these institutions directly.


Test Papers and Pattern –

Subjects – Seven subjects – Biotechnology, Chemistry, Economics, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics, Physics .

A candidate can appear in either one or two papers. But they can appear in two papers of only these papers are not scheduled to be examined in same session.

Total questions per subject – 60 questions.

Total marks – 100 .

Duration – Three hours. One hour extra for eligible PwD candidates and assistance of scribe will be allowed as per the norms of Government of India.

Examination type – CBT or Computer based test.

Language – Language of the test is English .


Section – There will be three sections in every paper.

Section A – 30 MCQ questions. 10 questions of one mark and 20 questions of  two marks.

Every question will have four options and among which only one option will be correct. Negative marking for the wrong answer of ⅓ marks for the questions of  one mark and negative marking of  ⅔ marks for the questions of two marks.

Section B – 10 MSQs or Multiple Select Questions carrying two marks each .

There will be four options for each question but among which one or more than one could be the correct answer. Candidates will get full marks if they answer all the correct options or no wrong option . No negative marking for wrong answers.

Section C – 20 NAT or Numerical Answer Type Questions. 10 questions will carry one mark and 10 questions will carry two marks.
There will not be any option and any negative marking in this section .

Session – Forenoon – 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
                Afternoon – 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm


Eligibility Requirements and Minimum Educational Qualifications

Candidates must have passed the undergraduate degree or are studying in the final year of the undergraduate degree. But they need to provide the proof of qualifying the undergraduate degree within the given time limit provided by the admitting institutions.

Candidates seeking admission also need to submit a Physical Fitness certificate in prescribed format by a registered medical practitioner. They may need to appear in the Physical Fitness test in admitting institutions.
