GRE or Graduate Record Examination

Conducted by – Educational Testing Services or ETS

Purpose – Admission in Masters degree and Ph.D courses in different universities of the United States and Canada.

Language of the Test – English

Two types – 1. GRE General Test
                    2. GRE Subject Test

GRE General Test –

It measures
1 . Verbal Reasoning

2. Quantitative Reasoning

3. Analytical Reasoning

Type – Computer based Test.

Test Sections and Timings ( from September 22, 2023 ) –

1 . Analytical Writing – One section – One “Analyze an Issue” task – 30 minutes.

2. Verbal Reasoning – Two Sections- Section 1 – 12 questions – Time – 18 minutes ;  Section 2 – 15 questions – Time – 23 minutes.

3 . Quantitative Reasoning – Two Sections- Section 1 – 12 questions – 21 minutes – Section 2 – 15 questions – Time – 26 minutes

Section Level Adaptation –

The Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections are section – level adaptive. The first section of each measure is of average difficulty. Difficulty of the second section depends on your overall performance on the first section. That means if a student does really well in the first section then the section will be at a higher level of difficulty.

Schedule – Anyone can take the GRE General Test once every 21 days and maximum upto 5 times within any continuous rolling 12 months period or 365 days. This applies even if anyone canceled the scores on a test taken previously.

Test Centre – The Test can be taken in any of the more than 1000 centers in more than 160 countries .

It can also be taken from the comfort of your own home .




GRE Subject Test –

It is a test to measure some subject specific skills .

Subjects – Mathematics, Physics and Psychology.

Content areas ( in short ) –

1 . Mathematics – Calculus – 50%
                             Algebra –  25%
                Additional Topics – 25%

2. Physics – Classical Mechanics – 20%
                    Electromagnetism    – 18%
   Optics and Wave Phenomena  – 8%
  Thermodynamics and Statistical
   Mechanics                                 – 10%

                 Quantum Mechanics   – 13%
                 Atomic Physics            – 10%
                 Special Relativity         –  6%
               Laboratory Methods       –  6%
                 Specialized Topics        –  9%

3. Psychology – Biological – 30 questions
                         Cognitive  – 29  questions
                         Social       – 19 questions
                Developmental  – 18 questions
                         Clinical     –  23 questions
Measurement /
Methodology / Other         – 25 questions



Type – Computer delivery test.

Time – 2 hours 50 minutes for the test in Mathematics. 2 hours for the test in Physics and Psychology.

Test Schedule – Anybody can take this test once every 14 days . This applies even if anyone canceled the scores on a test taken previously.

The Tests are offered 2 weeks per month in September, October and April .
