India – largest democracy in the world – people participate in general education – cast vote – they have right to choose leader – constitution gave them the right – Election Commission India organise and control the election system – specially the parliamentary and assembly elections –  State Election Commission organise and control the local body elections – general  election started in 1951 – 52 – approx population 1.44 billion in January 2024 – approx electors 970 million in 2024 – minimum age is 18 years to be a voter – people cast vote in lok sabha or parliamentary general election – choose MP or Member of Parliament for 543 seats – Party or Alliance with majority forms government – Central Government – They choose Prime Minister and other ministers among their MPs  – ministry forms – oppositions have great responsibility also – people participate in vidhan sabha or assembly election – in state or union territory – choose their MLA or Member of Legislative Assembly – winning party or alliance forms state government – They choose Chief Minister and other ministers from their MLAs – Central and State work together – people participate also in local body elections – Panchayat and Municipality or Corporation election – people cast votes – choose Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti , Zilla Parishad members and councillors – local bodies like Gram Panchayat, Panchayat or Block Samiti, Zilla Parishad , Corporation or Municipality form – They work to implement Central and State scheme in local areas – the democratic system is for the wellbeing of the people
