English Grammar – Uses of Made of, Made from, Made out of, Made with, Made in

Made of –
We use ‘made of’ when we describe or talk about a product that consists of a material which has not been changed . Form can be changed but the material remains the same.
It has a similar meaning as ‘composed of.’
Examples-

The glass is made of steel.

The plate is made of glass.


Here steel and glass are used to make new products but it still consists of steel and glass.


Made from –

We use the term when the product we are talking or describing about and the material that used to make the product are changed significantly while processing the product. We use the term to indicate how something is manufactured.

Examples –

Butter is made from milk.

Plastic is made from oil.

Paper is made from trees.

In these sentences we can understand – milk, oil and trees are significantly changed while processing the product butter, plastic and paper.





Made out of – We use this phrase to indicate a product that was transformed to be used as another product.

Examples –

The flower vase is made out of a water bottle.

The photo frame is made out of an unused leather bag.

Here the water bottle and the leather bag were transformed to be used as a flower vase and a photo frame.



Made with – We use this phrase to indicate the ingredients of food and drink.

Examples –

This soup is made with mushrooms, vegetables and black pepper.

This drink is made with lemon, salt, sugar and spices.




Made in – We use this term to indicate the location where something was made in.

Examples –

The Rasgulla is made in India.

This product is made in Japan.
