Difference between ‘May’ and ‘Might’ –
1 . ‘May‘ is used to express high possibility but ‘Might‘ is used for lower possibility. ‘Might‘ may be used to indicate something hypothetical or counterfactual.
Example – The teacher may finish the lesson now .
We might be late tomorrow .
2. ‘May‘ mostly be used in Present Tense but ‘Might‘ can be used in Past Tense also .
Example – She may join us.
You might have done this before.
3. We use ‘ May ‘ to ask or give permission. We use ‘ Might ‘ to ask for permission . But we don’t use ‘ Might ‘ to give permission.
Example – May I come in?
Might I be present there ?
You may join the meeting . ( Giving permission)
4. To express wish we generally use ‘May‘ , not ‘Might‘ .
Example – May you get success.
5 . For requests or suggestions ‘Might‘ can be regarded as preferable to ‘May‘ . But both can be used.
Examples – Might I take your car ?
May I take your car ?
