Devastating landslide in Wayanad, Kerala – in hilly areas – at early hours on 30th August , 2024 -:Tuesday – Wayanad is a hilly area and part of Western Ghats mountain range – prone to landslide in monsoon season – Kerala is mostly landslide affected state in India – 59.2% of India’s landslides occurred here from 2015 to 2022 – 13 districts of Kerala is landslide prone -heavy rain is the main reason – landslides affected several areas – these are Mundakki, Chooralmala, Attamala, Kunhine – Chooralmala is mostly affected – whole village vanished – in just four hours – three landslides stucked – homes, shops, vehicles were swallowed by the earth – a bridge connecting Chooralmala to Mundakki Attamala is collapsed – these places are isolated – as on Thursday morning 277 people died – over 200 injured – 240 people are missing – more than 1500 people rescued – Army,Navy, Air Force , Disaster Management teams, NDRF, Defence Security Corps , firefighters, state administration are working together in rescue operation – several relief camps – Government Medical Colleges, hospitals and private hospitals working tirelessly – Army engineering unit built a Bailey bridge to reach the isolated areas- satellite images showed that 86000 square metres of land slipped – debris flowed for over 8 kms along the Iruvaiphuza river – CM Pinarayi Vijayan declared official State mourning – PM Narendra Modi announced Rs. 2 lakh to the relatives of the death – Rs. 50000 to injured –
