Devastating Flood in Southern Districts of West Bengal

Devastating flood affected West Bengal –  districts of South Bengal – Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur,Howrah, Hooghly, Birbhum, Bankura, Paschim Burdwan, North and South 24 Parganas mostly affected – due to heavy rainfall from 13th to 15th September – and water released by DVC( Damodar Valley Corporation) – situation worsened – due to discharge of almost 5 lakh cusecs water by DVC – mainly from Maithon and Panchet dams – rivers like Darakeswar, Kansai, Damodar are overflowing – many people are homeless – damaged to their property – homes submerged – almost 5 lakh people residence affected – 3 people died – took shelter in relief camps – scarcity of drinking water and food – water logging – 1000 sq kms area affected – public infrastructure damaged – loss of cattle – huge loss to crops and vegetables – Chief Minister of West Bengal Shrimathi Mamata Banerjee visited affected areas – rescue and relief operations started by Administrations and Government – State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force engaged – NGOs and Social organisations also participated in relief work
