Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup 2023 is just over now. It was the 15th edition of the tournament. India hosted the tournament this year. It was held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela. So Odisha hosted the tournament from 13 th to 29 th January. Newly built Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium with a seating capacity of 20011 , is now recognised as the largest fully seated hockey arena in the world as per the Guinness World Records.16 team participated in the tournament. This year the name of the mascot of the tournament is ‘ Olly ‘ . It is a representation of the critically endangered olive ridley sea turtle . They travel thousands of kilometres in the ocean . Germany won the tournament and defeated Belgium in the final in the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar. The match was tied 3-3 in the scheduled time and penalties Germany defeated Belgium by 5-4 . Netherlands defeated Australia by 3-1 to in third and fourth place match to secure the third place. Germany won the trophy for three times now. India finished the campaign at 9th position in the tournament. Germany’s Niklas Wellen became the Player of the tournament. Jeremy Hayward of Australia won the award of the Top goal scorer with 9 goals and Vincent Vanasch of Belgium became the Goalkeeper of the tournament . Young player of the tournament award went to Mustapha Cassiem of South Africa. Fair play award went to Belgium. Best team Goal Celebration Award went to South Korea . Fan’s Choice Award went to Christopher Ruhr of Germany . Maximum Team Goals Award went to Netherlands ( 32 goals ) . Best Forward of the tournament Award went to Niklas Wellen of Germany, Best Midfielder of the tournament Award went to Victor Wegnez of Belgium . Best Defender of the Award went to Jeremy Hayward of Australia.
