Baranagar is a village located in Jiaganj , Murshidabad district of West Bengal. It is now selected as the ‘Best Tourism Village in India’ in the ‘Agri – Tourism Village Category.’ Ministry of Tourism, Government of India organized an annual competition to choose the best tourism village in India. This time Baranagar is selected and the award will be given on 27th September on World Tourism Day. This is an award to promote our economical, social, cultural and environmental sustainability in villages and also to make tourism a part of rural development.
Baranagar is one of the traditional and oldest villages in Jiaganj Block, Murshidabad,West Bengal . It is so attractive for historical and heritage monuments. The Palace of Rani Bhabani is one of these. The Terracotta Temples are also very attractive . Some of these famous temples are – Char Bangla Temple which has triple entrance, Temple of Bhubaneswar Shiva, Temple of Rajarajeswari , Temple of Gopal, Gangeswar Temple , Siddheswari Temple, Addya Temple, Binod Temple, Panchmukhi Shiva Temple etc. These temples are included in the Terracotta Temple Complex. These are examples of Bengal’s famous historical Architecture and craftsmanship . In the time of Rani Bhabani, the place was known as ‘Varanasi of Bengal’ due to the existence of many temples.
The people of Baranagar village are still involved in keeping the tradition of the village and maintaining the sustainability and eco friendly environment. They are involved in craftsmanship and weaving of some famous fabrics like Baluchari, Tangail and Jamdani . There are also homestay facilities for tourists who visit the place.
No doubt it is a beautiful example of rural life and culture. We are proud of the achievement of this village.
