Aditya L1, India’s First Ever Solar Mission

ISRO created another history. They successfully launched the first Solar Mission of India , Aditya L1 by PSLV – C57 . It is India’s first Solar observatory system. The vehicle placed the satellite precisely into its orbit . The spacecraft will be placed in L1 or Lagrange point 1 of the Sun – Earth system . L1 is a location in space where the gravitational forces of two celestial bodies, such as the Sun and Earth , are in equilibrium. So an object placed there can be relatively stable with respect to both celestial bodies. It is 1.5 million km from the Earth . Its function is to observe and study the sun.

The main objectives are –
1 . Study of Solar upper atmospheric or chromosphere and corona dynamics .
2. Study of chromospheric and coronal heating – physics of the partially ionized plasma, initiation of the corona’s mass ejections ,and flares .
3. Observe the in- situ particle and plasma environment providing data for the study of the particle dynamics of the sun.
4. Physics of the Solar corona and its heating mechanism .
5. Diagnostics of the corona and coronal loops plasma – temperature, velocity and density.
6. Development, dynamics and origin of CMEs .
7. Identify the sequence of processes that occur at multiple layers which eventually leads to solar eruptive events .
8. Magnetic field topology and magnetic field measurements in the solar corona .
9. Drivers for space weather ( origin , composition and dynamics of solar wind ).

It has 7 payloads –
